Girl : I think I am in love with you
Boy: What? You love me…???
Girl: Yes, I do…with all my heart…
Boy: How do you know?
Girl: I just know …do you? Love me?
Boy: I don’t love you…
I have been a big fan of the movie Patch Adams (1998). Largely, I must agree because I am a big fan of Robbin Williams. I have seen all of his films and learned so much from him as an actor. He is simply one of the best actors this century has seen.
In the movie Patch Adams, which is a true life story, of a man Hunter “Patch” Adams (you HAVE to see this one), Robbin Williams fancies the female protagonist Corinne Fischer (played by Monica Potter, who by the way I absolutely adore). Robbin Williams, is interrupted the first time he tries to read it out to her….but can only finish it after she has passed away….
The poem in discussion is one composed by Pablo Neruda in his work titled Cien Sonetos de amor Or One Hundred Love Sonnets XVII. The poem is called No te amo como si fueras rosa …..which means…I don’t love you as if you were a rose……
No te amo como si fueras rosa : I don’t love you as if you were a rose
Pablo Neruda (Cien Sonetos de amor), Translation by Eisner, M (2004) – City of Lights
I do not love you as if you were salt-rose, or topaz,
Or the arrow of carnations the fire shoots off.
I love you as certain dark things are to be loved,
In secret, between the shadow and the soul.
I love you as the plant that never blooms,
But carries in itself the light of hidden flowers;
Thanks to your love a certain solid fragrance,
Risen from the earth, lives darkly in my body.
I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where.
I love you straightforwardly, without complexities or pride;
So I love you because I know no other way
Than this: where I does not exist, nor you,
So close that your hand on my chest is my hand,
So close that your eyes close as I fall asleep.
I don ’t love you as if you were a rose of salt, topaz,
Or arrow of carnations that propagate fire:
I love you as one loves certain obscure things,
Secretly, between the shadow and the soul.
I love you as the plant that doesn’t bloom but carries
The light of those flowers, hidden, within itself,
And thanks to your love the tight aroma that arose
From the earth lives dimly in my body.
I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where
I love you directly without problems or pride:
I love you like this because I don’t know any other way to love,
Except in this form in which I am not nor are you,
So close that your hand upon my chest is mine,
So close that your eyes close I fall asleep
I came across this poster on a site called Red Poppy.
Let the poem linger on and on….make you wonder….wish…yearn…dream…sad….and happy again….with the following melodious tune …
Damien Rice – Delicate
(Disclaimer: The first paragraph has nothing to do with the movie nor with the song. It
is just a hypothetical conversation….whether it should be answered with the poem or not, is upto the two protagonists)
